Default Replacing a Three-Way Light Switch

I Tried Replacing A 3-way Switch With A 3-way Dimmer.all The Terminals Seem To Be The Same Color, two On One Side With A Red Wire On Top, White On Bottom And One On The Other Side Which Is Black. Also, There`s No Ground. I`m Thinking The Black Wire Is The Common But I`m Hesitant.

Can you describe the 3-way dimmer switch? Does it have two black wires and one red wire, that are "hard wired" into the switch? Or, does the 3-way dimmer switch have screw terminals, and, what color are the screws? White, or silver color? Brass or black color? Typically, a 3-way dimmer switch will have two black wires and one red wire. In this case, the red wire would be the "common" or, the "switch leg". This is the wire that feeds power to the light, and would be spliced to the black wire going to the light. The two other black wires are called the "travelers".
