Can I buy a larger outside unit (I added 500 sq ft to my house) without changing the inside portion of the air conditioning? I have an all electric house and therefore the furnace is electric. I think the outside of an air conditioner is called the condenser, but I do not know what the part that inside is called. Thanks, Linda

compressor is outside, condenser is inside. The answer to your question is you must replace the inside unit to or you will not get the correct efeciency. The coils must be rated for the compressor. How many square feet is your home now, and what size unit do you have?
