Default should the shingles butt up against the skylight or be left ...

should the shingles butt up against the skylight or be left an inch or so away so that some of the flashing is exposed?

Hi,

Butt against the step flashing. If you let a gap, things will start to gather. Then eventually you will have water wicking into the ceiling.
