Red face Getting rid of your vinyl stains on the hardwood.

I had a similar problem when pulling carpet off of my '40's built rental property. We found that sanding the wood down and refinishing it fixed it to almost new condition. The only thing that didn't sand down were what I would guess to be urine stains from a cat that a tenant had had. All other carpet backing glue stains, etc., sanded right up and the floors look beautiful otherwise. Just wish I didn't know what the other 2 4" spots that were left were!

Bleach will often remove stains that can't be sanded out.

We just pulled up the carpet in an old house and there was a lot of areas that were faded/discoloured. Most of the differences come out in the sanding, and even if some areas vary a bit, it all seems to blend in when it is varnished.
