Overhead light without a separate wall switch - fixture needs its own on-off. Can this be rewired for a wall switch?

Yes, the receptacle that the light is plugged into can be wired for a switch, and you can put the switch at any location you like.

how can a switch be installed if it's NOT a plug-in light? maybe i'm reading the answer that's already been posted incorrectly or don't know enough about this issue, but i have the same thing in my house. i took down a horrid light/fan when i first moved in--i believe the previous occupant operated it with the cords that hung from the fan. i've finally put a chandelier in the fan's place, but i have to turn it on and off using the circuit breaker (the label for that circuit is "spare," and doesn't seem to operate anything else). i'd like to use a switch instead, but i don't want to have to hire an electrician for thousands of dollars to come install something. there is a switch on a nearby wall that doesn't appear to operate anything--it may turn the outlet on and off, i'm not sure.
anyway, is there an easy fix for this? the chandelier is wired directly into the ceiling, no plug. thanks! ![]() |
