Default Toilet issues

I have noticed that since I bought this house in July, every once in a while the toilet in the downstairs will back up and stuff will fill the bowl. This normally happens when we havent used it for a day or two, what would cause this?

Oops... I should have looked at the replies to other posts and realized that people read but never reply befor trying to get help with my issue
