I live in a 1910 home, but 10 years ago when I moved in, a friend who knows electric circuits and wiring replaced 95% of the old knob and tube wiring. I now have a grounded outlet in my bathroom next to the sink. Would it be possible to tie into that outlet and continue up the wall and install a switch and vanity light, and another switch for a ceiling vent fan?

Yes, only if the circuit is dedicated for that bathroom only. Also, the receptacle in the bathroom must be a GFCI receptacle.
