Default How to Adjust a Garage Door Opener

My garage door opener just started acting up since the ice and snow weather a couple of weeks ago.Sometimes wheh I push the opener button the door does nothing and then the next time I press the button it might open 3-5 inches and stops.I keep pushing the opener and the door closes,it had been working fine prior to this since lived here for 9 years now.The system is a Sears/Craftsman 1/2 HP-chain drive system installed through previous owners by a professional company April,1997.Should it be time for it to go out,or is there something simple I could adjust??Could someone shed some light on my problem and tell me what I can do to correct it.Thank You,bill head
