I want to install 3" x 3/4" solid oak flooring. After removing the old floor I discovered that the subfloor is only 1/2" plywood. The joists are 16" on center that the subfloor is in good shape. Everything I read indicates that the subfloor should be 3/4" thick. Does anyone have any suggestions. I've considered instlling 1/4" plywwod underlayment over the subfloor with contruction adhesive and nails but I'm not sure that would be sufficient. Any thoughts?

You should be OK just as long as you glue the heck out of it with a quality sub floor adhesive. Just use a rubber based adhesive - not a water based adhesive. Water based products cuts itself, thereby wanting to suck all the moisture out of the sub floor and the main floor, thereby breaking itself down overtime.

Deacon,
Thanks for the information. I'll be starting the project in a couple of weeks. |
