with the thermostat on a/c and automatic, the blower will run, but the outdoor unit- compressor and cooling fan will not come on. this is on a heat pump system from the late 70`s or 80`s.

Is this thermostat designed for use with a heat pump? Has it ever worked before? If not, you need to get one that's intended for a heat pump.
