Today my electric water heater suddenly started making a noise. I checked it and found the hot water was running out of the tank through the pipe on top of it. All the water was off throughout the area, but came back on in less than an hour. Now I don`t have hot water. We reset the tank, but still cold..Any ideas?

The problem may be a tripped fuse, a thermostat that is set too low, or a problem with the heating element or heater controls.
- Check the obvious first. Go to the main breaker panel and check for any tripped breakers or blown fuses. If a circuit/fuse continues to blow, call in an electrician for repairs. - Since the water temperature was fine before, it doesn't seem likely that the thermostat would be set too low. Check it anyway, though. - The high-temperature cutoff in the heater may have tripped. They are located where the thermostats are. Remove the cover and push the reset button. - If there is still a problem, then suspect the heating element(s). They can be tested with a continuity checker (a test light). Replacing a heating element is not a difficult job. -Turn off power first before working with electricity |
