Default Using Solar-Generated Electricity

Hi wodering if anyone can help me with this. Can an existing pool pump be connected to solar panels. Not for heating, just to run pump & filter. If so, what size panels will be needed for a 50m/sq pool & how are the panels connected to the pump.

Hey Richardn,

Well, I have an Idea !

Why don't you contact any Local distributor who supplies the solar panels I think you got the correct guidance from there and also you got the information about solar panel for your 50m/sq pool.

Richardn,

You would be better off getting a solar powered pool pump wired directly to the pv panels ( 1/2 hp. pump, four 130 watt pv panels and controller) You can add an ac power pack to it and your solar pump will work off the solar panels, or off of ac power or a combination of both. I have put these systems in and they work!!! The pump and controller will set you back about $1600, the ac power pack will cost you $500 or so, a junction box with breaker will cost you aroun $250 and the panels will cost you at todays prices about $600 each. The federal tax credit would be 30% of your costs.

Hi donpool,

Thanks for your advice.
But, Suppose I don't have any knowledge about electricity or Plumbing work then what ? Rather then doing my self I think it is lot better to hire a person who have proper knowledge of this things.

Paul,
I was not saying that anyone should do it themselves unless they had the knowledge or experience to do so themselves. I was only trying to let people know that the systems do exist, do work, and what they could expect to pay if they bought the components themselves.

Thanks Paul,
The solar powered swimming pool pumps are just starting to become more reasonable because the pv panels are coming down in price. There are not very many pool contractors or homeowners that even know they exist. I can't tell you how excited people get when they see their swimming pool pump running when it is not costing them a dime to run it all day long. It gives people a small sense of victory over the power companies. I know the initial cost is a little steep but with electricity costing what it does in Hawaii and California the payback time is about 4 or 5 years on their investment.
Don
